Sweet and Savory Watermelon Skewers
There are two types of people in this world.
Those who eat salt on their watermelon, and those who are missing out.
Personally, I’m kind of obsessed with the savory, salty, and sweet combination of flavors, and these skewers fit the bill perfectly! We ate them as an appetizer, but they would be great as a BBQ side as well.
This watermelon was so sweet and juicy that it basically melted in my mouth. Just look at it!
Watermelon Skewers
Skewer fresh watermelon, fresh mozzarella, and fresh basil leaves. Sprinkle with a large flake salt, drizzle with olive oil, and enjoy!
I love summer.

Very creative…I’ll have to try this!
Delicious.
A question for Cindy the Chemist(or perhaps a topic for a future post):
I’ve heard that salt reduces bitterness of foods and/or enhances sweet flavors. What is the chemistry behind this?
not sure what the chemistry is but I do know from experience if you have a cup of coffee that is bitter, a dash of salt will change eliminate the bitterness. I also use salt on my grapefruit. YUM
This looks so fresh and tasty for summer! I’m going to have to try it out for out next BBQ. Great post. Thanks for stopping by the blog!
This looks very tasty! I’ll have to give it a try while the watermelon is still fresh!
It looks so tasty!
Like Cameron: I’d like to know more about why salt enhances sweet food.
In the Philippines, a lot of people added salt when eating fruits. And I came to the conclusion that adding salt to papaya was the only way to eat papaya (otherwise it’s just really gross – my opinion of course, it may be discussed).
Interesting topic! And so far I’ve never tried salt on my watermelon… I’ll definitely try that!
I absolutely love this!!! It was so good when we grilled out a few nights ago!! Thank you for sharing!!
So glad you liked it!
Have you tried black pepper on ripe strawberries? I heard about this a few years ago, and it’s surprisingly good. Also, mango and watermelon are both pepped up with chile powder.
I’ve had chile powder on mango and watermelon (my husband loves it), but I’m definitely going to have to try black pepper on strawberries. That sounds both crazy and delicious!
The black pepper on strawberries is fantastic.. however now add balsamic vinegar reduction… Fabulous!
Also recommend- Honey, grated fresh Ginger & Lemon juice drizzled on Watermelon. Really amazing..
Wow LeAnn. I like the way you think!!
